What is the Australian Intensive Care Unit's rostering model?

Most Intensive Care Units (ICUs) in Australia operate on a 7 days on / 7 days off roster, typically running Monday to Sunday. However, rosters may vary slightly based on the size and location of the hospital.

Resident and Registrar generally work 12.5-hour shifts.

If you are working a permanent contract or an ongoing locum contract you will likely work 7 Day shifts, 7 days off, followed by 7 Night shifts and then another 7 days off – rinse and repeat!

Locum Intensive Care Consultants typically complete a block of 7-day shifts, with on-call responsibilities overnight.

Permanent Intensivists usually work Monday to Friday, sharing on-call duties on nights and weekends to ensure continuous patient coverage.

What salary can you expect working in Intensive Care in Australia?

  • Locum Intensivists with Specialist Registration earn approximately $2,000 – $3,500 per day inclusive of on call
  • Permanent ICU Specialists earn between $250,000 - $500,000 per year
  • Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) ICU Specialists can earn in excess of $500,000 per year
  • Locum Intensive Care Residents can expect to earn between $85 to $145 per hour
  • Locum Intensive Care Registrars can expect to earn between $130 to $250 per hour

What Qualification do you need to work in the ICU?

The specialist qualification in Australia is Fellowship of the College of Intensive Care Medicine of Australia and New Zealand.

You can check your training program against the CICM training program, to see if it is comparable in terms of content, duration, governance, and assessment.

If so, you may be able to apply for Specialist Assessment in Australia. The CICM training programme is 5 years. Doctors who have completed training in the UK/ Ireland (FICM + ICM) are often deemed comparable.
