Dr Daniel Galdau Interview
Can you tell us a bit about your background and Medical career before joining Your Doctor Jobs?
I worked at various placements, including Superclinics and after hours prior to meeting Justin at YDJ.
What motivated you to explore locum opportunities through Your Doctor Jobs?
I felt genuine interest in my wellbeing. Prior to meeting Justin, I felt recruiters would have their list of available jobs, and would see if I fit one of their job requirements. With Justin, I felt he listened to my needs and found jobs to fit my needs.
Who is your Recruitment Consultant and how long have you been working together?
Justin Smith, and I’ve known him for maybe just under 10 years.
What kind of support and guidance have you received from your Consultant whilst arranging placements?
I’ve told Justin my needs, and sure enough, within a short period of time, sometimes the same day, sometimes a month or two after, he would present me with something meeting my exact needs.
Could you describe some of the specific roles and placements that you have worked through Your Doctor Jobs?
I’m at the stage where I prefer 3-6 month locum roles. So far Justin has organised probably a dozen or more locums, and two long term contracts I have completed.
What location has been the most rewarding for you. Either personally or professionally and why?
Ironically, deep outback placements have been the most fun.
Can you share any tips or insights into how to succeed as a locum Doctor in todays healthcare environment for any Doctors who may be considering locum work for the first time?
I typically come to a new placement with a mindset to learn what’s new and different. Each location has it’s own flavour. When in Rome, be like the Romans. This approach has served me well. I’m always enthusiastic about my next placement.
Have you experienced any unforeseen difficulties on any of your placements and how were these challenges handled by Your Doctor Jobs?
Oh, absolutely yes. There are logistical issues, breakdowns, stupid doctor issues (myself, such as putting petrol in a diesel car), and just so many unknown unknowns. I’d not go to a new place without Justin having my back. I think there are few agencies that protect their doctor over their client. YDJ is the doctor agency for jobs, not the jobs agency for doctors.
Other than your toothbrush, when travelling to a new placement, what are 3 things that you could never forget to pack and take with you?
Probably I’m the worst person to ask. I pack my scrubs and wallet, and a few times, I forgot my wallet. Take your wallet, you’re going to need to identify yourself.
If you are working in a rural and remote area, how do you pass the down time whilst not working?
By working more, or local bush drives.
What is one unforgettable experience that you would not have had, if you were not locuming?
The floods in Fitzroy Crossing bought me an Australian Defense Force evacuation. I would have paid for that experience.
Lastly, we pride ourselves at being the best at what we do, but, in your opinion, what sets YDJ apart from other Recruitment agencies?
It’s an agency for doctors looking for jobs, not for jobs trying to fit doctors into their criteria. The doctor drives the process.
