We've compiled some frequently asked questions about travel, including policies on flights, hire cars, accommodation, and more. As travel allowances are becoming stricter, it's important to understand the guidelines and avoid unexpected costs.

1. Can I Choose the Flights I Want?

Answer:
Flight choices depend on the specific health district and the travel guidelines in place. Your consultant at YDJ will help you navigate these details. Here's what you should know:

Best Fare Policy: Clients prefer booking the best/cheapest fare available on the day, which can include airlines like Jetstar, Virgin, Qantas, and REX .
Travel Caps: There are caps on flight costs. Any airfare exceeding this limit requires higher client approval. In some cases, you may be asked to cover the difference.

2. Can I Change My Flight?

Answer:
Yes, flight changes are possible, but the costs depend on who initiates the change:

Client-Requested Changes: If the client requests the change, the costs will be covered with an approved quote.
Doctor-Initiated Changes: If you make the change, any additional fees will be invoiced to you.
Non-Refundable Fares: Flights booked with Qantas Red eDeals or Virgin Choice fares are non-refundable and change fees may apply.
Change Fees: A $99 fee is charged for processing Qantas and Virgin Refundable Fares .
24-Hour Rule: Flight changes must be made at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
No-Show Policy: If you miss your flight without notifying the airline, the fare will be forfeited and no credit or refund will be given.

3. Can I Use a Flight Credit?

Answer:
Flight credits have specific terms and conditions, which vary depending on the airline. Here's what you should know:

Partially Used Itinerary: If a flight is cancelled after part of the journey has been flown, the credit can only be used by the original passenger.
Higher Fares: To reuse a flight credit, the new fare must be higher than the original credit note value, including any airline fees.
Reissue Fee: Every time a flight is changed, a $99 fee will apply to reissue the ticket.
Expiration: Flight credits are valid for 12 months from the original issue date.

4. Will a Hire Car Be Provided?

Answer:
Yes, a hire car will be arranged for you during your placement. Here's what you need to know:

Car Selection: A suitable hire car will be provided to ensure your safety and comfort, depending on your location and requirements. For example, a small compact car is typically preferred, but in more remote areas, a small SUV may be necessary.
Fuel Policy: Please ensure you refuel the hire car before returning it. Refuelling charges at the depot can be significantly higher and may not be covered by the client.
Damage Inspection: It's recommended that you take photos of any existing dents or scratches when picking up the car. This helps avoid disputes later.
Damage Liability: If any damage occurs during your hire, inform YDJ immediately. The driver will be held responsible for any damage and may be invoiced accordingly.
Roadside Assistance:
Roadside assistance is not included in the standard car hire. If assistance is required due to driver fault (e.g. keys locked in car, incorrect fuel etc), additional charges will apply. You can save the hassle and take out roadside assistance when you pick up your car.

5. Will Hire Car Insurance Be Covered?

Answer:
Unfortunately, hire car insurance is not covered by the client or YDJ. Insurance is at the doctor's discretion. Here's a breakdown of insurance-related details:

Excess Reduction: The hire car booking does not include excess reduction. If you choose to add it, the cost will be invoiced to you.
Credit Card Insurance: Some credit cards offer hire car insurance. If the chargeback is removed during the booking, you can pay for the car upon collection and submit for reimbursement.
Travel Insurance: Many travel insurance policies include hire car excess coverage. You can also purchase a separate policy for the duration of your placement.

6. What Accommodation Will Be Provided?

Answer:
Accommodation will be arranged based on the available budget and preferences:

Types of Accommodation: This may include hospital onsite accommodation , a self-contained apartment , or an Airbnb-style rental .
Accommodation Allowance: We will do our best to match your preferences within the allocated budget. If you're willing to contribute additional funds, we can adjust the arrangement.
Cleanliness and Damage Policy: Accommodation must be kept in a clean and tidy condition. Any damage or excessive cleaning required may result in an invoice to the doctor.
Family Stays: If you're bringing family with you, please inform us beforehand to ensure appropriate accommodation is arranged.

7. Who Can I Contact for After-Hours Travel Issues?

If you encounter any travel-related issues after hours, don't worry—help is available!

A new fast track pathway for Specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) has been designed to allow qualified international medical specialists to start working in Australia sooner.

A new fast track pathway for Specialist international medical graduates (SIMGs) has been designed to allow qualified international medical specialists to start working in Australia sooner. It aims to remove unnecessary regulatory barriers and to assist with doctor shortage within the Australian Health Care system.

There are four specialties already approved, with more specialties getting looked at and will progressively be added once approved by the Australian health minister.

The current specialties on the list are –

* Psychiatry

Apply to the AMC for primary source verification of your primary medical degree and specialist medical qualifications.

Apply to the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to establish an EPIC/MyIntealth account for verification of qualifications

Apply for the Medical Board of Australia for specialist registration

Submit supervised practice plan along with position description, and an orientation

Immigration if required

Medicare provider number applications

Once on the pathway

Once you have started work, there are some requirements while you are registration on this pathway, they are below -
Completed six months supervised practice including an orientation to the Australian Health system and cultural safety education

After three months of practice, submit a supervised practice report

Complete the required work-placed based assessments

Complete any additional assessment of requirements specified by the Medical Board

At the end of the six months of practice, submit an orientation report, a supervised practice report and evidence of completed assessments

Apply to the Medical Board to have the conditions removed

Doctors already working in Australia

Do you hold limited registration but hold qualifications from those countries, you can apply for specialist registration through the expedited specialist pathway.

Grants for Doctors to work in rural Tasmania

The Rural General Practice Settlement Incentive Grant program

Program overview

Tasmania like most rural/regional areas in Australia are experiencing challenges in attracting and retaining General Practitioners into their towns to support the health system.

In November 2024 the Tasmania Government announced The Rural General Practice Settlement Incentive Grant program, also known as RGPSI Grant Program. This program is to attract up to 40 new Vocationally Registered General Practitioners to rural and regional Tasmania (MMM 3 – 7), by providing incentives for GPs who choose to call these towns home.

For overseas Trained Doctors, these locations will reduce your Ten-year moratorium.

Payment schedule

The payment schedule, for maximum payments will be the following –

$10,000 at the end of the first year of service

$20,000 at the end of the second year of service

$30,000 at the end of the third year of service

$40,000 at the end of the fourth year of service

Eligibility for the program

Registration with AHPRA

Fellowship of the RACGP or ACRRM (Registrars who obtain fellowship while working at the location who are not leaving can apply, but must remain at the location for five years from the time of signing the Grant Agreement)

Willing to provide services in an eligible regional area of Tasmania

Have (or are willing to obtain) provider numbers for the new location

Have (or are willing to obtain) credentials in regional hospitals for multi-purpose centre

The Doctors involved will be required to work at least 47 weeks each year to be eligible (0.5FTE will be pro-rated)

Commit to the full contractual agreement (5 years)

FTE Requirement

To be eligible for the maximum payment, you must work Full Time. Full time general practice experience comprises of a 38-hour minimum working week, over a minimum of four days per week. 27 hours must be in face-to-face, rostered, patient consultation time undertaking general practice activities. Doctors who work 0.5FTE will have the payments pro-rated.

The event, titled The M-Factor: Shredding the Silence on Menopause, was a free screening of a short film designed to shed light on the effects of menopause and perimenopause, and raise awareness about the range of treatment options available. Hosted and arranged by Dr. Hannah Chapman, a leading specialist in perimenopause care in Hobart, Tasmania, this event helped to break the silence surrounding a significant health issue that affects millions of women worldwide.

A Groundbreaking Discussion on Menopause

Share the Dignity is a women's charity in Australia which started in 2015, the charity makes a real difference in the lives of those experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence, or doing it tough. They distribute period products to women, girls, and anyone who menstruates who needs support. When someone is doing it tough, the last thing on their mind should be dealing with their period.

This year Your Doctor Jobs donated to the annual It’s in the Bag collection drive.

I’ve been a Locum doctor for eight or so years, a job I love. It’s challenging and rewarding. I’m in control of my life and workload, which I never was in my previous existence as a procedural GP.

Over these years I’ve engaged with four or five Locum agencies. Every reference I write seems to put me on another agency’s database. I’ve taken jobs from Tasmania to Torres Strait, from the Ningaloo Coast to Norfolk Island, and many others in between.

Sally-Anne was one of the first agents I worked with. I doubt I’ll find another one as good. ‘SAS’, as she signs off, quickly got to know my preferences — rural and remote clinics requiring ED cover, with dog-friendly and wife-friendly accommodation. She’s always coming up with new destinations to whet my appetite or repeat jobs which she knows I particularly enjoyed. And SAS seems to have the same rapport with the clinics themselves. Each of my queries or concerns gets thoroughly investigated. Every email is answered, including after hours when they shouldn’t be. Most important, those occasional but inevitable hiccups are promptly sorted.

Of course, we all want to feel special, but SAS has that knack of balancing friendliness with professionalism. She has become my go-to locum agent, and I’m sure, many others’ too.

One of our Recruitment Consultants, Leaha, lives on the North Coast of NSW and has a long-standing involvement with the club through her children.

Long story – short!

Leaha looks after our Hospital Division and has been part of the Yamba Surf Life Saving Club since relocating to the area from Western NSW. Raised on a dairy farm by the ocean in Gerringong, Leaha has always been a passionate ocean lover. When she moved her young family to the coast from Western NSW, she was determined that her children would become confident swimmers with a deep respect for the ocean. Her goal was to ensure they had the knowledge and skills to be safe in the water later in their teen years, whether surfing, fishing, or just enjoying the beach with friends.

Leaha says that her two sons started as little Nippers, and are now active patrolling members of the Yamba SLSC, giving back to the community and club that put time & knowledge, into them when they were younger.

Introducing the U19’s ‘Wet Sponges’

Last season, Yamba SLSC introduced an under-19s surf boat rowing team, and Leaha’s boys jumped at the chance to get involved. Surf boat rowing is a high-adrenaline sport that only a few are daring enough to try, as it combines extreme physical demands with the unpredictability of the ocean.

The four boys aged from 16 to 19, unanimously agreed that the name "Wet Sponges" would be the perfect fit for their crew. The name captures both the fun and the gritty reality of surf boat rowing.

Boaties face choppy conditions and powerful waves, testing their trust in their crew and their “sweep” to navigate the boat safely.

When conditions get gnarly, the crew’s courage, grit, and teamwork are put to the ultimate test. Their mission? To stay in the boat, cross the finish line first, and—most importantly—come back unscathed!

The Origins and Evolution of Surf Boat Rowing: From Lifesaving to Competitive Sport

Surf boat rowing has deep roots in Australia’s coastal history, originating from the life-saving efforts of early 20th-century surf lifesaving clubs. The sport began as a practical response to the need for sturdy boats that could navigate through powerful surf to rescue swimmers in distress.

By the 1940s, surf boat rowing had evolved from a purely rescue-focused activity into a competitive sport. Competitions began to spring up among surf lifesaving clubs along Australia’s east coast, as teams challenged each other to race through breaking waves and reach the shore first. In 1946, surf boat racing officially became a recognized event at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships, cementing its place in Australia’s beach culture.

9 years of Your Doctor Jobs

It's hard to believe that 9 years have passed since I embarked on the crazy journey of creating and launching my own medical recruitment agency, Your Doctor jobs or YDJ.

Starting an agency from scratch has been a humbling, yet immensely satisfying experience, validating that my vision to become a premier choice for doctors, clients, and staff was more than just a pipe dream.

The recruitment industry is often known for high staff turnover, but our mantra has always been to cultivate a stable, fun, and supportive work environment that values everyone who interacts with us. This approach has paid off, with only one staff member departing in the past 9 years - a rare feat of workforce consistency in this field.

Our strategic plan is straightforward - let revenue guide our organic growth, and ensure our consultants are well-supported and empowered to succeed. I'm proud to say that I have one of the best and most experienced teams in the industry, comprising 9 exceptional individuals with diverse backgrounds, interests, and perspectives that lend depth and personality to our agency.

Wowee, another birthday down at YDJ and it only seems like yesterday that YDJ was first established as a small boutique Medical Recruitment company specialising only in GP and ED doctors’ placements. Despite all the major disruptions in Australia dealing with COVID, YDJ has had a very productive year and being strategically based in Hobart has been advantageous for us and has allowed YDJ to operate at almost 100 percent capacity with business continuity. We have been very lucky with no lock downs or interruptions with business closures, allowing us to continue to thrive and grow during these difficult covid times and assist our doctors and clients.

No placement would be possible without our amazing and dedicated doctors. You have really stepped up to the challenges of an ever changing COVID landscape, and navigated through all the restrictions/lockdowns that have been enforced. You’ve answered the call to some of our most remote communities in Australia and for that we truly thank you for your support.

To all our amazing clients that we work closely with day in, and day out as it has not been easy and once again thank you for your ongoing support and trust you place in YDJ to source you the right doctor for your clinic in these difficult circumstances.

Finally, none of this would be possible if it was not for our dedicated and hard-working team that continue to deliver outstanding service and customer excellence. Applications for the General Practitioner Procedural Training Support Program (GPPTSP) are now open until midnight Sunday 8 August 2021 .

GPPTSP
The General Practitioner Procedural Training Support Program (GPPTSP) provides $40,000 for eligible GP Fellows to gain either the Advanced Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (DRANZCOG Advanced) or Advanced Rural Skills Training in Anaesthesia.

The GPPTSP aims to improve access to obstetric and anaesthetic services for women living in rural and remote communities by supporting GPs to attain procedural skills in obstetrics or anaesthetics. The Obstetrics component of the program is managed by RANZCOG, and the Anaesthetics component is managed by ACRRM.

Eligibility
To be considered, applicants need to be a General Practitioner (GP) working principally in Monash Modified Model classifications MMM 3-7.

For the purposes of this program, GP means a medical practitioner who has achieved Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and/or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM).

What you need to know before you sit your RACGP fellowship exams

Come 31 December 2021 new restrictions will be coming in for doctors who are going to be sitting their RACGP fellowship exams. The new restrictions will affect doctors that are currently on programs such as the MDRAP program. Doctors on the MDRAP will have to apply for one of the below eligible programs. MDRAP is to facilitate access for doctors GP experience while applying too and gaining access on a training program.

Eligibility to sit RACGP exams.

To be eligible to sit the RACGP fellowship exams, candidates must be on one of the follow pathways towards fellowship.

The pathways are:

Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) registrar
Remote Vocational Training Scheme (RVTS) registrar
General Practice Experience (Practice Eligible)
Practice Experience Program
Specialist Pathway Program
Specialist Recognition Program

All enrolments are subject to eligibility audits conducted by the RACGP at the end of the enrolment period. Therefore, if you are found not eligible and do not meet the criteria, you will automatically be withdrawn from sitting he exams and will be subject to a $100 withdrawal fee per exam segment.

How many exam attempts can you have?

Candidates can have six enrolments over a period of three years to pass all three Fellowship exam segments (AKT, KFP and clinical assessment). This period does not include approved leave from the RACGP. Candidates who fail to pass exams within this timeframe will not be eligible for FRACGP.

Therefore, you will have three years and six possible exam cycles to pass all three exams. Due to the prerequisite for the clinical exam, if you pass the AKT and KFP by the sixth cycle, you will only have one attempt at the clinical examination.

Medical Board registration

All candidates must hold current Medical Board registration throughout the assessment process. Candidates must inform the RACGP of any restrictions on their practice of changes to their medical registration.

Clinical examination

Due to COVID-19, the Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) had to be modified due to restrictions. Therefore, the next exam implemented is the Remote Clinical Exam (RCE).

RCE is delivered entirely remotely and therefore not impacted by COVID-10 restrictions, allowing all eligible to complete the clinical examination.

NO BETTER TIME TO LOCUM

After 11 years in medical recruitment, you probably think you’ve seen it all when it comes to the locum market. The high peaks and low troughs come and go in an almost predictable way, however 2020 is unlike anything we’ve ever seen before – the locum doctor market is similarly unprecedented.

Why is this so? There are so many different ways to answer that question, here are just a few of the main ones:

Getting your foot in the door:
A ‘job rich’ market has been present for the past 4 – 6 weeks, or since the ‘2nd wave’ really hit Victoria, and had ripple effects with NSW as well. As predicted, GP/ED roles throughout NSW and QLD in particular opened up from September – November, many of which had been snavelled up long ago by repeat locums who have since had to cancel due to travel restrictions. Across the other side of the country, highly sought after (but difficult to acquire) locums jobs in places like Broome, Kununurra and the newly built Karratha Health Campus have had ongoing availability for locums open up. There has never been a better time to ‘get your foot in the door’ in areas that you’ve always been interested in.

‘Local only’ locums:
The news isn’t all bad for our clients, with many of their shortages now being filled by local, or intrastate based locums. The majority of our amazing doctors prefer to locum interstate for obvious reasons, but with many now forced to locum closer to home, this has had numerous benefits. Lower travel costs, less paperwork due to doctors already being credentialed, and in many cases shorter blocks needing to be filled as permanent doctors unfortunately postpone those longer overseas breaks

RACGP Practice Experience Program (PEP) for non-VR GPs

What is PEP

The PEP program is a self-directed education and support program for doctors working towards fellowship in regional, rural and remote Australia.

The Non-Vocationally Registered Fellowship Support Program (FSP) is funded under the Australian Government’s (Department of Health) Stronger Rural Health Strategy for Doctors based in Modified Monash Model (MMM) areas 2 to 7.

Benefits of the PEP

Personalised program – with a tailored online learning package, focus on the units most relevant for the doctor based on the doctors existing experience

Support network – with a specialist GP mentor, scheduled workplace visits and ongoing feedback

A1 Medicare rebates – with access to a PEP provider number and full A1 Medicare rebates, you can experience the same benefits as a Specialist GP while participating on the PEP program.

Professional confidence – with ongoing support from mentors and online learning units to expand your skills in Australia general practice, the PEP supports your professional development while you prepare for the RACGP Fellowship exams.

Best Practice – with expert support and feedback from GP mentors, and online learning units to complement the doctors existing skill sets and experience, the doctor can feel confident providing patients with the highest quality healthcare.

How long does the program take?

The duration and tailored program ranges from two to five six-month terms (ie. 12 – 30 months), this time is a case by case basis as it allows participants to focus on individual learning needs, building their experience and the areas of Australian general practice most relevant to them, based on previous experience and skill.

Changes for Non-VR GP’s from January 2022

The Australian Government is changing the rules for doctors who do not hold fellowship who want to work in Australia. From January 2022, non-VR doctors who do not hold a specialist qualification are required to complete an approved program to be eligible to sit the RACGP fellowship examinations.

Changes to the Approved Medical Deputising Service (AMDS) Program

Effective from the 1st August 2020, the AMDS program guidelines are changing, and this will affect some afterhours doctors who are currently on the program.

What is AMDS?

The Approved Medical Deputising Service (AMDS) program is a 3GA program which offers non-vocationally (non-VR) recognised doctors the opportunity to gain general practice experience while being subject to section 19aa of the Health Insurance Act.

Why AMDS?

The AMDS program allows general practitioners who are subject to section 19aa access to deputise after-hours care for their patients to alternate service providers.

Approved participants are granted access to Medicare rebates for providing primary care to patients in an approved AMDS practice, home visits in the patient’s home, or in residential aged care facilities. This reduces the need for patients to attend an emergency department for after-hours care, to allow the Emergency apartment to see patients with actual emergencies.

What is 19aa?

You may hear section 19aa being thrown around a lot, and not realise how it could affect your access to Medicare benefits if you become a permanent resident of Australia.

Doctors who are permanent residents or citizens of Australia who are not vocationally recognised are subject to section 19aa of the Health Insurance Act. In order to get access to Medicare benefits you must go on a 3GA approved training or workforce program.

YDJ has seen many times where doctors with general registration apply for permanent residency, and then have their provider numbers cut as they become subject to section 19aa and are not informed before making the decision to apply for permanent residency

Changes to AMDS come 1st August

At present doctors who hold limited, provisional, and general registration are eligible for the AMDS program.

From 1st August the guidelines are changing and doctor who hold limited and provisional registration will no longer be available for the program if they are visiting home doctors. Doctors who hold limited and provisional registration and are doing AMDS in-clinic services will remain on the AMDS program.

YDJ would highly recommend that doctors who hold limited and provisional registration currently doing home visits to start looking at their next options.

Temporary extension of the locum tenens period

The locum tenens period for health professionals is now 12 weeks. The Department of Health has temporarily extended the period to support the COVID-19 response.

This means you can provide Medicare services from a new location, using your existing provider number if both the following apply:

you’re operating from the new location for less than 12 weeks
you’ll return to your usual location after this time.

This arrangement isn’t available for restricted health professionals. This includes doctors who need a section 19AB exemption, a 3GA placement or are participants of the OMPs program. Restricted health professionals will still need to apply for an additional provider number to get Medicare benefits from a new location.

Firstly, bloody well done and keep up the exceptional work on the front line!

The world has certainly shifted dramatically over the past month with COVID-19, and each time Scomo’s head appears on the TV we move further into unchartered territory, with state border restrictions and tighter measures to self-isolate

As a locum company that specialises in Rural and remote FIFO locums across most states and territories in Australia, it has been a very busy time for us trying to get doctors home before border restrictions tighten, and to also get doctors to their location before Qantas or Virgin cancel flights.

At YDJ we must adapt as well, and have modified our business strategy to reflect the current locum environment that we must now ask our doctors to locum in.

We have 3 simple strategies:
1. Keep doctors aware of the changing border restrictions for each state. You will see updates from us when there is a major change and what that will mean.
2. Try and place doctors for longer in rural locations, so instead of 2 weeks, why not 4 weeks or longer
3. Keep doctors located in their own state or territory, this will then typically not require any self-isolating, and is safer if travel is limited.

Some states like WA are now making doctors self-isolate on location for anywhere between 7-14 days but do pay them a 1K per day allowance for this, for this reason that is why we advise in some location to stay longer.

City GP’s will get quieter – contact us now
I have a doctor in Canada who was reporting a decrease in patient numbers 3 weeks ago, which was having a dramatic impact on their revenue stream due to the tight isolation measures. And only last week I was discussing this with a NZ doctor that has advised he is also seeing this after NZ went into total lock down last Wednesday.

Will this happen in Australia? I suspect it will in some areas, and I would advise all our doctors that like to locum to get in touch with your consultant and get pro-active if you would like to work during this difficult period. We have rural locum positions now, but I suspect these to become more competitive over the course of the next month.

Federal Government keeps critical regional aviation services alive

Regional Express (Rex) , strongly applauds today’s announcement by the Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) and the Leader of the Nationals, the Hon Michael McCormack MP, of a comprehensive Regional Aviation Rescue Initiative tailored to ensure that critical and essential regional aviation services continue to be provided amid the worst operating conditions the industry has ever seen.

Regional operators can henceforth access two funds. The first fund, amounting to $198 Million, is designed specifically to ensure that the existing network of Regular Public Transport (RPT) regional air services is maintained albeit at a reduced capacity. The second fund, amounting to $100 Million, is to assist all small regional operators overcome the sudden cash crunch brought about by the near drying up of all demand over the last two weeks. This second package seeks to give these operators the best chance of staving off the prospects of going into administration.

Rex’s Deputy Chairman, the Hon John Sharp AM, said that this very significant initiative by DPM McCormack and the Morrison Government targeted at all regional aviation services is an investment into the future of regional communities, “All regional communities and residents should be extremely grateful to the Coalition Government for its commitment to the future of the regional cities.”

“This meaningful assistance package not only seeks to keep essential air services going, but also tries to prevent the existing regional aviation providers from collapsing.”

“Just two days ago a group of eight regional operators (Rex not included) issued an Open Letter warning the DPM that they are within days of running out of cash. With this assistance package, regional Australia can be sure that all previously sustainable regional operators will be able to spring back into business if the crisis dies down within the next six to nine months. With the network of regional aviation operators intact, not only will thousands of jobs be saved but regional communities can retain a minimum of vital air links which can be quickly expanded to assist the regional communities in their rebuilding efforts after the crisis.”

“Rex had earlier prepared a media release to announce the total shutdown of its network today and the standing down of 90% of our staff. With this assistance package from the Federal Government and with further support pledged by some State and Local governments, Rex will be able to continue operations in almost its entire current network of 59 destinations and in the next two days will be presenting its new national network schedule that will be constructed based on the following parameters:

Prevailing passenger numbers on each route;
Federal Government criteria for access to the assistance package;
State Government priorities for states where the State Government has provided assistance;
Exit from some routes where there has been no or inadequate support from local government (councils), thereby making the route non-viable;
Joint decision with QantasLink on which carrier services each of the 10* competitive ports. This collaboration will be undertaken in strict conformance with the interim authorisation given on 26 March 2020 by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

“If our projections are accurate and if Rex is able to draw on its fair share of the assistance packages, this Regional Aviation Rescue Initiative put forward by the Coalition Government will permit Rex to sustain, for at least 6 months, its revised national network schedule even if passenger demand drops by 95% compared to pre-COVID days. As of yesterday, the reduction stands at -85%.”

“While it is unfortunate that Rex will still need to stand down many staff, mainly flight crew and engineers since the flying activity will drop by about 80%, the assistance packages will mean that we can avoid 30-40% of our staff from being stood down. On behalf of all staff at Rex, I would like to express our utmost gratitude to DPM McCormack and the Morrison Government for making such a big difference to so many families.”

Sydney to Wagga Wagga, Albury, Dubbo and Armidale. Melbourne to Mildura. Adelaide to Whyalla, Port Lincoln and Kangaroo Island. Townsville to Mount Isa and Cairns.

The YDJ Hobart team are proud members of the Mobart MoBros (& MoSistas!) and have raised over $123,208 for men’s health so far this year. Currently number 1 in Australia and 6th in the world. Mo Bros since 2003 have raised 5,232,625 and had 15 million in donations over that time.

The boys trained hard to run 21km with a steep uphill up kunanyi/Mt Wellington in the Point to Pinnacle.

Due to weather conditions, Mt Wellington was closed so the boys and the other 3000 competitors had to race down to Longley. The alternate route was polar opposite to the steep incline they were expecting, as once they’d reached the Fern Tree tavern it was all downhill from there!

You may wonder why the team took on this challenge –

Movember is an annual event which is about creating awareness for men’s mental health. This could be anything from anxiety, cancer, men’s suicide and more.

Changing the Specialist Pathway Program: What does the SRP mean for overseas GPs?

Overseas GPs now have a new process for securing doctor jobs in Australia after the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) decided to alter the existing Specialist Pathway Program (SPP). This program has been replaced with a new Specialist Recognition Program (SRP) designed to optimise best practice guidelines and improve education and support for international medical graduates.

What do the RACGP’s changes to international doctor’s applications mean?

What do the changes mean for international doctors?

While the SPP and the SRP remain very similar application processes, the new program is designed to rethink how overseas medical qualifications are viewed compared to Australian certification. As such, overseas GPs will now need to fill out an extensive comparability assessment, which includes details on:

The recency and continuity of your medical practice.
Participation in ongoing professional development.
Any specialist or other relevant qualifications you hold.

Applications will still take around 10 weeks to be assessed by the RACGP, with applications split into three categories:

Substantially Comparable – Successful applicants will be awarded Fellowship ad eundem gradum (FAEG), meaning they can start looking for Australian doctor jobs.
Partially Comparable – If applicants secure this pathway, they then must complete standard RACGP medical examinations while working in Australian general medicine within a 24-month timeframe.
Not Comparable – This means international doctors will have to find another route to RACGP fellowship in order to practice in Australia.

The medical qualification you gained overseas will be compared to equivalent certification in Australia under the Specialist Recognition Program.

When will these changes take effect?

The RACGP will stop accepting application payments for the SPP as of 31 August 2018. Any applications made before this time will still be processed under the existing policies. The Specialist Recognition Program will open on 3 September 2018 for new overseas applicants.

How do I apply?

To go through the SRP, overseas trained GPs must complete a comparability application, in order to determine if their international medical qualification is suitably comparable to the qualifications of an Australian-trained doctor, or if further certification is needed. You start this process with an online form, which will then be analysed by independent RACGP assessors.

This new process will make applications lengthier for overseas-trained doctors who want to relocate to Australia. New DPA scheme that has replaced DWS

As of today, Monday 1 July 2019, the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) is introduced a new health workforce classification system.

The Distribution Priority Area (DPA) system has replaced the Districts of Workforce Shortage (DWS) system. The stated purpose of this change is to better facilitate the placement of medical practitioners in communities of greatest need across Australia.

The key differences between the DWS and DPA are outlined below:

• Rather than using a GP-to-population ratio, the new DPA system takes into account demographics (gender/age) and the socioeconomic status of patients living in a GP catchment area.

• Inner metropolitan areas are automatically deemed non-DPA.
• MMM5–7 are automatically deemed DPA.
• Northern Territory is automatically deemed DPA.
• Benchmarks will determine the services required in GP catchment areas. These benchmarks will be fixed for three years to allow areas to stabilise their workforce

Just the same as DWS, overseas trained doctors subject to section 19ab must work in a DPA location.

The DoHA has provided a ‘search the map’ tool which allows you to select locations across to Australia to view their classification.

BC to Torquay: Dr. Herman Mentz’ Aussie GP experience with YDJ

Trained in South Africa, living in Canada and now on locum in Australia – Dr Herman Mentz has been around, and loves his ability to blend work and travel.

”I’m a free spirited person. I’ve always wanted to travel, and I’m lucky I can work while doing so. Friends recommended Canada, and I came here initially on a six-month locum contract – I just ended up staying here cause I love it. British Columbia (BC) is so beautiful,” Herman says.

”But after eight years, I got the travel bug again, and wanted somewhere sunny this time.”

He then remembered a chance conversation with Justin Smith, Director of Your Doctor Jobs, at a conference a few years earlier.

Starting the journey

”I met Justin at a Continuing Medical Education Conference in Vancouver about four years ago. He was very personable and made a great first impression. I added him to my contacts in case I ever wanted a move Down Under,” says Herman.

”By chance, my neighbour in Vancouver is from Sydney, so was always selling the sun and fun during the cold winter months. I thought about it for a while, then dug out Justin’s card.”

With his time in Torquay nearing an end, Herman is reflective on all he had done, ”It’s been an amazing experience. I spent three weeks exploring Melbourne by foot, and did a large portion of the Great Ocean Road. Working regular hours for only five days a week in a small clinic was a big step away from the ER work I do in Sechelt (the small town in BC where I live).”

Herman also unwound by hiking and scuba diving in Victoria’s many remote nature spots.

Getting your head around these can be a challenge when you first arrive and have significant bearing on the practice you choose to work in.

There are many common misconceptions about the differences in these systems – so let’s take a look at the differences between bulk and private billing, and which you should choose when you start your Australian GP career.

What is bulk billing?

In Australia, government-funded healthcare provision is covered under the Medicare scheme. This is free for Australian citizens and certain other groups, and Medicare members are required to present a card at time of billing to access the service.

When you bill a Medicare patient for your consultation or other medical services , the payment is processed through their Medicare card. The government will then reimburse your practice the full fee, and a percentage will be passed back to you. Sixty five to seventy five is the standard, but you can negotiate this.

What is private billing?

Private billing, also known as mixed billing, refers to patients who pay for medical services at their own expense. This can be split proportionately with Medicare payment, and the ‘top up’ fee covered either through private payment or by an insurance provider.

After several years of divisive debate, the Federal review of the Skill Occupation List has concluded with GPs and other medical specialists still among the ranks of sought-after skills.

Peter Chong of PR Migration Services said, ”There are no conditions attached to the profession and generally applications can still get the four year 457 visa”.

There has been a mere 12.5 per cent increase in the number of Australian doctors between 2004-2015.

Doctors’ place on the Skill Occupation List has been an issue in the medical community for a long time, with the national undersupply of GPs being met with foreign imports.

However, with efforts to encourage more Australians to take up a stethoscope limited, this decision seems sound. It ensures qualified international doctors can still secure their dream career move to Australia.

The Australian doctor shortage

Australia has had an increasing undersupply of doctors over the last 15+ years – The Department of Health (DoH) indicates there were just over 22,000 GPs nationwide in 2002, meaning there were roughly 111 for every 100,000 people.

But the way to address this shortage has been a point of contention. Adding a number of medical professions to the Skilled Occupation List was an obvious solution. This allowed overseas doctors to practice in Australia under a 457 visa after passing national medical exams.

Many, however, thought this would do nothing to address the undersupply of Australian doctors nor the shortfall in rural and remote parts of the country.

Similarly, DoH data shows the population of nationally-qualified GPs in inner and outer regional areas has only increased by around 36 per cent over this time. In contrast, the number of overseas-qualified doctors has more than doubled on average between 2002-2017.
